◉ Vigil

Terms and conditions

Last updated October 13, 2026.

These terms are the agreement between you and Vigil ("we", "us") for your use of Vigil. By creating an account or using Vigil, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use Vigil.

1. What Vigil is

Vigil organizes material you supply into a readable case file — a timeline, labeled exhibits, and a finished PDF package. Vigil is software. It is not a lawyer, not the police, not a bank, and not legal or financial advice. We can't promise that police, a bank, a lawyer, or anyone else will accept your file — that's their decision, not ours.

2. Your account

You sign up with your name, an email address, and a password (minimum 8 characters, stored as a one-way hash we can't read). You agree that the information you give us is accurate and that you'll keep it up to date. You're responsible for keeping your password private and for everything done through your account — don't share your login. If you believe someone else has access to your account, change your password and tell us right away.

Anonymous cases

You can also use Vigil without an account or an email address: a secret link opens the case instead of a login. Whoever holds that link has full access to the case, so treat the link like a password. If you lose it, the case is gone — we don't know who you are, so we can't find it for you. Anonymous cases delete themselves 30 days after your last activity, unless you choose a different retention period in case settings. The finished $29 package is only available on regular (non-anonymous) cases, because the checkout needs an email address for the receipt.

3. Your content

You keep ownership of everything you upload — your evidence, your case details, your files. By uploading, you give us permission to store, back up, and process that material for the sole purpose of running Vigil for you. That includes sending text you provided to OpenAI's API when you ask Vigil to organize your evidence (see our Privacy policy), processing your payment through Stripe, sending your account emails through Resend, and keeping backup copies so your evidence survives a server failure. We don't sell your content, share it with advertisers, or use it for anything else. Don't upload anything illegal, anything you don't have the right to share, or passwords and banking logins — black those out of screenshots before uploading.

4. License

We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable license to access and use Vigil for your own case files, subject to these terms. The Vigil app, its design, and its text are ours (or our licensors'). You may not copy, reproduce, frame, or resell any part of Vigil without our prior written permission.

5. Acceptable use

Don't use Vigil to harass anyone, break the law, upload material you have no right to share, or try to disrupt or break into the service. If you do, we may suspend or terminate your account and refuse any further use.

6. AI limitations

Vigil's organizer uses AI, and AI can make mistakes — misread dates, amounts, or names. Every exhibit keeps a permanent ID, and new uploads are marked Documented until you mark them Verified by hand. Always check the organized file against your originals before giving it to police, a lawyer, or a bank.

7. Payments

Creating an account, building cases, and uploading evidence is free. The finished PDF package costs $29 CAD per case, processed securely by Stripe — we never see or store your card number. The $29 package is only available on regular (non-anonymous) cases, because the checkout needs an email address for the receipt — anonymous users keep the free organized case file above instead. All sales are final once the package is generated, because it's instantly downloadable.

8. Availability

We aim to keep Vigil running around the clock, but we can't promise zero downtime. Keep your own copies of everything important — don't treat Vigil as your only copy.

9. Deletion

You can delete any case from its page, and your whole account — cases, uploads, and history — from Settings. Deletion is immediate on the live system and permanent, so download anything you want to keep first. Backup copies age out within 30 days. See our Privacy policy for details.

10. What we're responsible for

If something goes wrong on our side, the most we're responsible for is the amount you paid us. We're not responsible for decisions made by police, banks, lawyers, or anyone you share your file with, or for losses from your use of AI-organized material you didn't check against your originals.

11. Changes to these terms

If these change in an important way, we'll post the new version here and update the date at the top. Continuing to use Vigil after that means you accept the new terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Alberta and Canada.
